When to marry

May to October is the main season. July and August are hot and busy; late spring and early autumn are often ideal.

Ceremony & paperwork

For a legal civil wedding in Spain, at least one partner usually needs to be a Spanish national or to have been legally resident in Spain, typically for around two years. Most UK couples therefore marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Spain, which can take place almost anywhere. Requirements differ between regions and can change, so check with the local Civil Registry.

Legal or symbolic?A legal ceremony abroad makes you married under that country’s law. A symbolic ceremony has all the romance without the paperwork, and many couples then complete a short legal formality in the UK. Requirements vary and can change, so always check current official guidance for your destination, including GOV.UK’s guidance on getting married abroad, before booking.
